Seven Lamps of the Candlestick

The seven candlesticks in the book of Revelations are defined by the Lord as representing the seven churches: Rev. 1:20 "The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches."  Thus, the candlestick is defined as representing the church.

The furniture of the tabernacle included a golden candlestick.  This candlestick had a main stem and six branches.  The main stem and the six branches each held a lamp.  Therefore, the candlestick had seven lamps.  The main purpose of a lamp is to give light.

We conclude that there are seven sources or types of light that the New Testament church has to guide her.  These seven lamps or sources of light are:

    1.  Christ – the light of the world.  (John 8:12 "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.")  The church has the light of Jesus eternal life to guide us.

    2.  the light of regeneration.  (John 1:9 "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.")

    3.  life of the disciples.  (Matt. 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.")

    4.  word of God.  (Ps. 119:105  NUN. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.")

    5.  gospel.  (2 Tim. 1:10 "But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.")

    6.  church collectively.  (Matt. 5:14 "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.")

    7.  Spirit.  (John 16:13 "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.")

Seven Eyes and Seven Spirits

There are two passages of scripture that speak of their being seven eyes:

    1.  Zec 3:9 "For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day."

    2.  Rev 5:6 "And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth."

It is apparent that the seven eyes represent the seven Spirits of God set forth into all the earth.  The seven Spirits of God would of course be the completeness of the One Holy Spirit.  One of the characteristics of God is that he has all knowledge of all things at all times.  He knows all things past, he knows all things present, and he knows all things future.  The Holy Spirit watches over all things:

    1.  Gen 6:8 "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD."

    2.  Deu 11:12 "A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year."

    3.  1 Sam 26:24 "And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation."

    4.  1 Ki 15:5 "Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite."

    5.  1 Ki 16:25 "But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did worse than all that were before him."

    6.  2 Chr 16:9 "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars."

    7.  Psa 11:4 "The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men."

    8.  Psa 34:15 "The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry."

    9.  Prov 5:21 "For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings."

    10. Prov 15:3 "The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good."

    11.  Prov 22:12 "The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor."

    12.  Amos 9:8 "Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD."

    13. Zec 4:10 "For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

    14. 1 Pet 3:12 "For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil."

In all of the above verses, we note that it is the Holy Spirit that is watching over the actions of men and trying them and rewarding or punishing them.
